What should a statement of work include?
A good statement of work states the parties and objectives, lists checkable deliverables with acceptance criteria, names assumptions, client dependencies and exclusions, defines revision rounds, sets the timeline, fees and payment schedule, explains how changes are approved, and covers IP, confidentiality and sign-off. The Proposal and Statement of Work Kit from Bodhih Training gives you a plain-words template for each part.

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.
Proposals written for every request
A day of your best thinking goes into a proposal for a client who needed a comparison quote, or who never let you meet the person who decides.
A number that felt about right
Without an estimate you cannot tell a fair price from a loss. The calls, feedback rounds and handover never make it into the quote, so the effective rate quietly falls.
Take it or leave it pricing
One price gives the client two choices, yes or no. Often 'no' meant 'not all of that', but there was no smaller option to say yes to.
The silence after you press send
An emailed proposal is read without you. The reader skims to the price and forms a view you never hear.
Discounts that start the project short
'Any flexibility on price?' leads to ten percent off and the same scope, and the client learns your first number was padded.
Scope that means different things
'Brand guidelines' meant twelve pages to you and sixty to the client. Small extras pile up with no change order, and the margin leaks away.
Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.
Picture the next enquiry that lands in your inbox. Instead of opening last year's proposal, you score it in ten minutes on fit, budget, authority and urgency, and send a short reply that books a 45-minute discovery call with the person who decides.
Now imagine the call. You ask what has prompted this now and how they will know it worked, and you write down their exact words. When you open the Estimate Builder the next morning, every task has a role, hours and a risk buffer, and the Pricing Options sheet shows three options with their margins before you write a word.
Think about the presentation. You read back the client's own words, show the option you recommend, and pause. When they ask about price, you already know the two trades you could offer and the margin below which you will not go.
And then the fifth week of the project, when a good idea arrives that is not in the scope. You reply kindly, send a one-page change order, and the work starts only when it is approved in writing. Whether you begin with the e-book tonight or the workbook tomorrow morning, the whole process is ready for the next yes.

Three options turn "should we hire you?" into "which way should we work with you?" They let a client with a tighter budget start smaller, and let a client with bigger ambitions buy more without you having to guess. They also show your thinking: what is essential, what you recommend, and what would add further value. There is a well-known pricing effect called anchoring: the first number someone sees influences how they judge the next. Used dishonestly, that means inventing an absurd top option to make the middle look cheap. Used honestly, it means every option is real, deliverable and worth its price, and the top option shows what the fullest version of the work costs. A rule that keeps you honest: you must be genuinely happy to deliver any option the client picks.

The Proposal and Statement of Work Kit: FAQs
Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my linkHow do I write a proposal a client will say yes to?
Start with discovery, not the document. Open the proposal with the client's problem in their own words, state the outcome and how it will be measured, offer three real options with what each excludes, recommend one, and present it live. The kit's template and message library cover each step.
What should a statement of work include?
Parties and objectives, checkable deliverables with acceptance criteria, assumptions, client dependencies, exclusions, revision rounds, timeline, fees and payment schedule, the change process, and IP, confidentiality and sign-off. The SOW template covers all twelve parts in plain words.
How do I stop scope creep without upsetting clients?
Agree acceptance criteria, revision rounds and a change process in the SOW before work starts. When a new request arrives, welcome it, explain it is outside the scope, and send a one-page change order with cost and timing. No change work starts before written approval.
Should I offer three pricing options?
Three real options let clients choose how to work with you rather than whether to. Every option must be deliverable and worth its price, list its exclusions, and clear your walk-away margin. The Pricing Options sheet builds all three from one estimate.
What is the difference between an MSA and an SOW?
A master services agreement holds the general legal terms once for a client relationship; each project then gets a short statement of work describing that project's deliverables, acceptance, fees and timing. The kit includes a discussion sheet for agreeing MSA topics before your lawyer drafts it.
How can I measure my starting point?
AssessAll offers assessments matched to this kit: the Bid and Proposal Quality Assessment for Sales, Consulting and Grant Teams, the Commercial Terms and Contract Reading Assessment for Freelancers, Managers and Small Business Owners, and Consultative Solution Framing. Take one before your next proposal and again after a few months. Links are on the Start Here map.
How do I turn this into a development plan?
Use the win-loss reviews and the mistakes card to choose one or two skills to practise, such as discovery questioning or negotiating with trades, and build them into a plan. Jobulary explains how its development plans work; the link is on the Start Here map.
Are the contract templates legally valid?
No template is valid everywhere. The proposal, SOW, change order and MSA templates are plain-words starting points that help you agree the substance with your client. Contract law, IP ownership, late-payment rights and tax differ by country, so have your lawyer formalise them and ask your accountant about tax and invoicing.
Does it work for solo freelancers as well as agencies?
Yes. The workbook's Rates sheet can hold a single role, the calculator has a rate floor for one person, and the scripts work for a freelancer or an agency team. The sample case is a 12-person studio, and the e-book includes freelancer examples throughout.
Which software do I need?
The workbooks open in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice and use no macros. The forms are fillable in Acrobat Reader and most PDF apps, the templates open in Word or Google Docs, the calendar imports into Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar, and the CSV imports into common task boards.
What is the refund policy?
Digital kits are non-refundable once downloaded. The exceptions are corrupted files that are not fixed within 3 working days, duplicate charges, or failed delivery.
How much does The Proposal and Statement of Work Kit cost?
₹999 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $29 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.
How do I get the files after paying?
Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.
What software do I need?
Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.
Can I get a refund?
Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.
Can my company buy this for a team?
Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
