Quick answer

How do you write an employee handbook?

Scope it by size, countries and risk; inventory what exists and rank the gaps; use one policy template; draft in plain language, with AI only as an assistant; review practically and legally; approve with version control; launch with managers first and track acknowledgments; then review yearly. The Employee Handbook and Policy Builder from Bodhih Training gives you a file for each step.

Sound familiar?

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.

A handbook nobody opens

A long PDF, last edited years ago, written in legal language. People stop reading, managers improvise, and two people in the same company end up with different rules.

Policies that contradict each other

Three meal limits in three documents. A harassment contact who left two years ago. Every contradiction becomes a wrong decision waiting to happen.

Nobody owns the whole set

Policies get written when something goes wrong, by whoever is closest, in whatever format was to hand. Nobody can say which version is current or when it was last reviewed.

New questions with no answers

Staff use AI tools, work hybrid, ask to work from abroad. The handbook was written before any of it, and laws on these topics keep moving.

Launches that change nothing

An attachment on a Friday evening, a reply of 'confirmed' four minutes later, and no idea what anyone understood.

Different countries, different rules

Teams in India, the UK, Kenya or the Gulf need local entitlements and procedures, but you want one set of values and standards.

Now imagine this

Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.

Picture the first morning of the project. Instead of opening a blank document, you answer ten questions in the Scope Finder, and as the results appear you can see which policies you need now, which can wait and which you can skip. By lunchtime the scope is three signed sentences and nobody can add the procurement manual by stealth.

Now it is week two. As you fill in the Inventory, the Gap Analysis sheet ranks what is missing, overdue or in progress. The contradictions you find get decisions, not merges, and each one is logged with its reason.

Imagine week six. Every draft uses the same seven sections, scores above your readability target and has been checked by people who will use it. The legal adviser received focused questions by country. The leadership team sees one page of changes and approves the batch in a single meeting.

And then launch day and the months after. Managers heard it first. The leader's email links rather than attaches. The Ack by Team sheet shows who has confirmed, the Questions Log shows what was unclear, and the next review date is already in the calendar. Whether you start with the e-book tonight or the workbook tomorrow morning, the handbook becomes something you maintain rather than something you dread.

A taste of Chapter 1

There are two broad styles of policy. A rules-based policy tries to cover every case: hotel rates by city, meal limits by time of day, a list of banned websites. A principles-based policy states the purpose and the boundary, and trusts people to use judgement within it: "Spend company money as if it were your own, within these limits, and be ready to explain any claim." Netflix made the principles style famous with its published culture memo on freedom and responsibility. Neither style is right everywhere. Safety, data protection, anti-bribery and harassment need firm rules because a wrong judgement is costly and the law often requires specifics. Flexible working, dress, travel booking and learning budgets often work better as principles with examples. Most good handbooks mix the two, and say plainly which is which.

Questions buyers ask

The Employee Handbook and Policy Builder: FAQs

Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my link

What is included in the Employee Handbook and Policy Builder?

A 10-chapter e-book, the 12-sheet Policy Library Manager, a Scope and Readability Calculator, 4 fillable PDF forms, 7 Word templates (including 33 policy templates, a handbook master template and 38 messages), 5 one-page references including the Start Here map, an 8-week calendar and a task board import: 21 files in all.

What should an employee handbook include?

A welcome and purpose, how the handbook works and which version applies, values, first weeks, hours and flexibility, pay and expenses, time off, safety and wellbeing, how we treat each other and how to raise concerns, technology, data and AI, growth, what happens when things go wrong, leaving, and country information. Each section summarises a policy and links to it.

How many policies does a small business need?

Fewer than most long lists suggest. Core policies such as conduct, harassment, speak-up, hours, leave, sickness, data protection, safety, grievance and disciplinary matter from the first hire. Others depend on size, countries and risk. The Scope Finder in the kit recommends a set from ten questions.

Is this legal advice?

No. The kit teaches good practice for writing and running policies. Employment and data protection law differ by country and sometimes by state or city, so check your HR team, company policy and local law, and have policies reviewed by a qualified adviser. Country notes are dated October 2026 so you know when to recheck.

Will the templates work in my country?

The kit is built for international use: a global core written to never promise less than local law, with country addenda for local entitlements and procedures. Every policy template carries a 'check local law' note, and the workbook works in any currency.

Can I use AI to write our handbook?

AI can help structure notes, rewrite in plain language, check consistency and draft FAQs and quizzes. A person must decide every rule and verify every legal statement, because AI tools can invent laws that sound real. The kit includes a drafting loop, prompts with checks and an AI use at work policy.

How do I measure my starting point?

AssessAll offers assessments matched to this kit (separate products, not included): HR Business Partner & Employee Relations Judgment, Structured Business Writing Work Sample for Consultants, Managers and Technical Leads, and Speak-Up: Raising a Concern and Hearing One. Take one before you start and again after your first review cycle.

How do I turn this into a development plan?

If you are building HR or policy skills for yourself or your team, see how a Jobulary development plan works at jobulary.com. It can help you turn the work in this kit into a record of growth.

How often should an employee handbook be updated?

Review every policy at least once a year, fast-changing ones such as AI use every six months, and early whenever the law, the business or a pattern of questions changes. The Policy Library Manager flags reviews that are due soon or overdue.

Which apps do I need?

Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice for the workbooks; Word or Google Docs for the templates; any PDF reader that supports forms, such as Acrobat Reader; and any calendar or task app that imports ICS or CSV files.

How much does The Employee Handbook and Policy Builder cost?

₹999 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $29 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.

How do I get the files after paying?

Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.

What software do I need?

Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.

Can I get a refund?

Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.

Can my company buy this for a team?

Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
