Negotiation simulation for teams: create value, then claim it
Six issues, two sides that value them differently and one condition the other side can never accept. Practise trading, not just splitting the difference.
- Play an AI counterpart with a persona, or another team
- Three invented deals, six issues each, with private points tables
- A BATNA on each side and a hidden deal-breaker
- Pareto debrief: every possible deal, the frontier and where you landed

What is a good negotiation simulation for training a team?
Negotiation Arena is a live Bodhih Arena exercise lasting 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Teams negotiate a six-issue deal against an AI counterpart or another team, each with private priorities, a walk-away alternative and a hidden deal-breaker. Scores reward value claimed and value created, and a Pareto chart shows every possible deal.
What is Negotiation Arena?
Negotiation Arena is a live, multi-issue negotiation simulation from Bodhih Arena. Small teams exchange structured offers across six issues, such as price, term and support, using a private points table and a BATNA, their best alternative to a deal. One side has a hidden deal-breaker. Teams play an AI counterpart with a chosen persona or another team. Scoring covers value claimed, value created, judgement, efficiency and a written reflection, and the debrief shows the Pareto frontier.

Most negotiation training ends with a handshake and no idea what was left on the table
People split the difference on everything
Meeting in the middle feels fair, but it often leaves both sides worse off than a trade across issues they value differently.
Role-plays are hard to score
With paper briefs and a partner from the next desk, nobody knows whether a deal was good, only whether it felt good.
Walk-away points are guessed, not used
Negotiators accept deals worse than their alternative, or walk away from deals better than it, because they never worked the number out.
Here is the situation you walk into
In The Ward Platform, Corvane Health Network, eleven hospitals and forty clinics, is buying a clinical software platform from its preferred vendor, Tessaline Systems. It is the final commercial meeting. The annual fee, licence term, implementation support, where the data lives, payment terms and exclusivity are all still open.
Your team sees its own brief: background, interests, priorities, your BATNA and a points table for every option. You do not see theirs. Somewhere in their table is a long licence term they care about far more than you do, and somewhere in yours is migration support you care about far more than they do. One side also has a condition it can never accept.
You send structured offers, ask questions and read the replies. Against the AI, the counterpart might be a tough anchorer, a collaborative problem-solver or someone under time pressure. Agree, walk away, or run out of time. Then write a short reflection before the debrief shows what was possible.
How a run works
- STEP 1
Set up the session
The facilitator chooses a scenario, team against AI or team against team, a length of 30, 45 or 60 minutes and, against the AI, a persona. Each team takes the roles of lead negotiator, analyst and note taker.
- STEP 2
Prepare
Read your private brief and points table, work out your BATNA and decide which issues to trade and which to protect.
- STEP 3
Negotiate
Exchange full offers across all six issues and talk between offers. The AI counterpart concedes on a schedule, trades across issues using what you reveal and answers questions in character.
- STEP 4
Close or walk
Accept a deal, walk away to your BATNA, or let the clock run out. Then each team writes a short reflection on what happened and why.
- STEP 5
Debrief
The Pareto chart plots every possible deal, the frontier and where each table landed. Notes on each issue reveal which were a fixed pie, which were tradeable and which both sides wanted the same way.
Who Negotiation Arena is for
- Sales and key account teams. Practise trading term, support and payment for price, instead of discounting, against a counterpart that pushes back.
- Procurement and commercial teams. Rehearse multi-issue buying negotiations, use your walk-away point properly and find value beyond the unit price.
- L&D and leadership programme managers. A scored, repeatable negotiation module that runs the same way for every group, with credentials for participants.
- Business schools and executive education. A live negotiation class with a clear debrief on distributive and integrative bargaining, ready for discussion.
Who should skip it
It is not coaching for a specific live deal of your own; the companies and points tables are invented so the lessons transfer to any deal.
What your people can do after Negotiation Arena
Participants leave knowing how to find the trades that make a deal bigger, and how to claim a fair share of it without breaking the relationship.
Trade on differences
Give what is cheap for you and valuable to them in return for the reverse, as a package, rather than conceding issue by issue.
Know and use the walk-away point
Accept any deal better than your BATNA if you cannot get more, and walk away from any deal worse than it.
Anchor with reasons
Open ambitiously but credibly, and give a reason for every number so it can be defended.
Ask about interests without giving away your table
Ask what matters and why, and answer questions carefully so your own priorities stay private.
Protect a deal-breaker
Say early that something is not possible, without revealing everything else you care about.
Learning goals
- Create value by trading across issues the two sides value differently
- Claim a fair share of the value without damaging the relationship
- Use a BATNA to decide between a deal and walking away
- Recognise fixed-pie, tradeable and shared-interest issues
- Reflect in writing on what happened and why
Skills practised: Integrative and distributive bargaining, Decision making under pressure, Strategic thinking about trade-offs, Questioning and listening, Team coordination, Written reflection.
Competencies scored
Sub-scores map to the open Bodhih Competency Spine, so results sit beside your other learning records.
What the debrief shows
- A Pareto chart of every possible deal, the frontier and where each table agreed.
- Issue-by-issue notes on what was really going on: a fixed pie, a trading card or a shared interest.
- Each team’s scores for value claimed, value created, judgement, efficiency and reflection.
- Awards for Value creator, Sharpest claimer and The right call, and the six principles every debrief points back to.
Pareto frontier
The set of deals that cannot be improved for one side without making the other side worse off. Deals below the frontier leave value on the table that both sides could have shared, usually because they split every issue instead of trading on differences.

How much does Negotiation Arena cost?
Negotiation Arena is priced per participant at $39 per seat, with volume tiers by seat count. Up to 25 seats can be bought online. For larger groups, request a quote: we invoice, you pay offline and your seats are activated.
Can Bodhih facilitate a negotiation programme for us?
Yes. Facilitated sessions and programmes are available by quote. You can also run sessions yourself: the facilitator starts them from the Simulations area of the Bodhih dashboard.
Can an individual buy a session?
Negotiation Arena is run by organisations for teams, so it is not sold to individuals. You can register interest for an open cohort, and we will contact you if one is arranged.
How long does it take, and how many people can join?
Sessions run 30, 45 or 60 minutes. A session can hold up to eight teams. Each team works best with two or three people as lead negotiator, analyst and note taker.
What are the scenarios?
Three invented deals: The Ward Platform, a hospital network buying a software platform; Shelf in Ten Minutes, a food brand agreeing a listing with a quick-commerce app; and Twelve Hundred Rooftops, a solar installer and a housing developer. Each has six issues, so a group can play again with a different scenario or AI persona and meet a fresh challenge.
How is a team scored?
Value claimed counts 30, value created (the share of the best joint deal) 30, judgement about deal or walk-away and the deal-breaker 15, efficiency 10 and the written reflection 15.
How does the AI counterpart behave, and can it invent numbers?
It plays one of three personas: a tough anchorer, a collaborative problem-solver or a time-pressured negotiator. It never invents numbers. AI wording has a budget per session and falls back to templates when it runs out, so the negotiation carries on.
Do participants receive a credential?
Yes. Participants in a full session receive an Open Badges 3.0 credential mapped to Negotiation and Commercial Acumen on the Bodhih Competency Spine, with a public verification page and Add to LinkedIn.
Can we try it first?
Yes. Sandbox sessions use no seats and no AI and issue no credentials, so facilitators can rehearse a scenario before running it for real.
Does it work with our LMS?
Negotiation Arena runs inside Bodhih Arena: participants sign in to Bodhih and find their session on their Arena page. It is not launched through LTI today.
How is this different from a negotiation role-play?
A role-play relies on paper briefs and a facilitator’s view of who did well. Here the briefs stay private, offers are structured, every deal is scored, and the Pareto chart shows what each table could have achieved.
Devices, privacy and refunds?
Each person needs a web browser on a laptop or desktop. Session data stays within your organisation’s Bodhih account; see bodhih.org/privacy. Refund terms are at bodhih.org/refunds.
Stop splitting the difference
Six issues, private priorities and a chart that shows exactly what was left on the table. Run one session with your team this quarter and compare the deal they make with the frontier.
