Quick answer

How can my account managers practise handling a customer who demands a discount at renewal?

The Discount Ask is a Bodhih Arena micro-sim in which your biggest software customer demands a 15% discount to renew. In four exchanges you ask questions, build packages from discount, contract length, volume, payment terms and extras, or accept a counter. It scores margin kept, whether the deal closed, the relationship and your read of the buyer.

What is The Discount Ask?

The Discount Ask is an online renewal negotiation simulation. You are the account director at Northgate Routing, whose largest client, Harbourline Logistics, pays $1.2M a year for route-planning software. Its head of procurement asks for a 15% discount and mentions a rival quote. Over four exchanges you question her, build packages that trade price against other terms, or accept her counter. What she really values, how much she needs and whether the rival quote is real stay hidden until the debrief.

The discount request arrives, and the margin starts walking out of the door

The first offer is a number

Under pressure, most people answer a discount demand with a smaller discount. It feels like progress and it tells the buyer there is more room.

Nobody knows what the buyer actually needs

Is it a target from the CFO, fear of another outage, or a sense of being taken for granted? Each needs a different answer, and the renewal often closes before anyone asks.

Packages get signed without being priced

Monthly billing, a free module and a price cap each cost something. When they are added one by one in the rush to close, few people can say what the final package is worth.

The scenario

Here is the situation you walk into

You are the account director at Northgate Routing. Harbourline Logistics uses your route-planning software for 1,500 drivers and pays $1.2M a year in advance. It is your biggest account and the renewal is due in a month. Your software costs little to run, so almost every point of discount comes straight off your profit.

Mara Lindqvist, Harbourline's head of procurement, emails to say Harbourline needs a 15% discount to renew, has a quote from another supplier and wants to talk this week. On your screen you can see today's contract, her ask, a relationship gauge and a calculator that shows what any package would bring in a year against today.

You can open with questions or with an offer. If you ask, she will tell you something about what matters to her and about her driver numbers for next year. If you offer, she will counter. You have four exchanges, and from the second one you record your private read of what drives her.

How it plays

5 decisions, one debrief

  1. STEP 1

    Exchange 1: question or offer

Ask questions first, with no offer, or make an offer. A package sets the discount (0 to 15%), contract length (one to three years), extra drivers committed, payment terms and up to three extras.

  2. STEP 2

    Choose your extras with care

The extras: stronger service levels with credits, the forecasting module free for year one, a 3% cap on price rises, Harbourline acting as a reference, or dropping a module they barely use. Each shows its approximate cost to you.

  3. STEP 3

Exchanges 2 and 3: read, adjust, trade

Mara answers in her own words and counters with a discount on the rest of your package. You can accept her counter, ask again or offer something new. Too many questions can test a buyer's patience; an offer worth less than your last one costs goodwill.

  4. STEP 4

    Exchange 4: your last move

Make your final offer, accept her counter, or hold at today's terms and let her decide. Your latest read of what drives her is locked in and scored.

  5. STEP 5

    The debrief

See whether she signed willingly, reluctantly or not at all, what the contract brings in net of its terms, and the hidden truth: what drove her, how much she needed and whether the rival quote was real.

Who it’s for

Who The Discount Ask is for

  • Account managers and customer success leads. You own renewals. This is a safe place to practise asking before offering, and to see how much margin a good question saves.
  • B2B and SaaS sales professionals. Every buyer with a procurement team will ask for a discount. You will learn to answer with a package, not a percentage.
  • Sales managers and deal desks. You approve the discounts. Play it yourself, then use the debrief language with your team: what did we get back for that point of discount?
  • Negotiation and MBA students. Interests, anchoring, BATNA and value creation all show up in one renewal, with a buyer that reacts to what you do.
Being honest

Who should skip it

It is not a scripted role play with an actor, and it does not cover contract law or a full multi-issue team negotiation.

What you take away

What changes once you have traded your way out of a discount

The Discount Ask builds the judgement to protect margin and the relationship at the same time, which is what a renewal really tests.

You will ask before you offer

You will open a discount conversation with a question, and you will listen for whether the buyer is chasing a number, avoiding risk or wanting to feel valued.

You will answer with a package

You will reach for term, volume, payment timing and extras that cost you little and matter to this buyer, instead of moving the discount line alone.

You will never give without getting

Every concession you make will come with something back, and you will keep each new offer worth at least as much to the buyer as the last.

You will price the whole deal

You will know what the contract brings in a year net of billing terms, free modules and caps, so you can defend it to your own finance team.

You will judge a threat you cannot verify

A competing quote may be real or leverage. You will practise deciding how much weight to give it, an everyday case of decision making under uncertainty.

Learning goals

  • Find out what the buyer values before you make an offer
  • Trade concessions that are cheap for you and valuable to them, never give them free
  • Keep the real cost of a package in view: price, terms, scope and extras

Competencies scored

Sub-scores map to the open Bodhih Competency Spine, so results sit beside your other learning records.

What the debrief shows

  • What you signed, whether she signed willingly or reluctantly, and what the contract brings in a year net of its terms against today's $1.2M.
  • How many questions you asked, the relationship score you ended with, and your read of her against the truth.
  • The reveal: what drove her, the value she needed, whether the rival quote was real, and a package she would have signed early.
  • Why differences in value make better deals, what strong negotiators do, and the key concept of trading on differences in value.
Key concept

Trading on differences in value

The best negotiated deals swap things that are cheap for one side and valuable to the other. You can only do it once you know what the other side values, which is why the questions come before the offer.

Renewal season preparation

Ask every account manager to play it before the renewal cycle opens, then review their packages together. The same buyer reads differently on each play, which keeps the discussion honest.

Set it as pre-work for a negotiation or key account workshop. People arrive with their own result, and the trainer can build the session on what they actually did.

A stage in a sales pathway

Place it in a Bodhih pathway for account managers or new sellers. Completion counts towards the stage, and sub-scores record Commercial Acumen, Negotiation, Relationship Building and Listening.

Assessment centre exercise or LMS assignment

    The Discount Ask: FAQs

    Ask us anything

How much does The Discount Ask cost for one person?

It costs $12 for one person, paid online, and you can play it in your Bodhih account straight away. It is sold as a single simulation.

How does pricing work for a team or company?

Company seats are $12 each, and volume tiers lower the per-seat price as numbers grow. Buy up to 25 seats online; for more seats, facilitated sessions or a university licence, request a quote and we activate the seats after offline payment.

    How long is it?

About 15 minutes for four exchanges, the brief and the debrief.

    What exactly do I get?

The simulation, a score out of 100 with four sub-scores, a debrief that reveals the buyer's hidden motives and numbers, a place on your company leaderboard when played through a company account, and a credential if you score 80 or more.

Can I play again with a different buyer?

Yes. Every play is a new seeded scenario: what drives the buyer, the value she needs, her growth plans and whether her rival quote is real can all change.

    Do I receive a credential?

Yes, at a score of 80 or more: the Arena Micro-sim Mastery credential for The Discount Ask, issued as an Open Badges 3.0 credential with a public verification page and an Add to LinkedIn option.

Does it work with our LMS?

Yes. It launches from Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and D2L through LTI 1.3, with the score returned to the gradebook, and it can be a stage in a Bodhih pathway.

What do I need to play?

A modern browser on a laptop, desktop, tablet or phone. Nothing to install; a larger screen makes the package calculator easier to use.

    Who should play it?

Account managers, customer success leads, B2B and SaaS sellers, sales managers who approve discounts, and students of negotiation.

How is it different from a negotiation case study?

A case study tells you what the buyer wanted. Here you have to find out, under time pressure, and every offer you make changes her response and the relationship.

    What happens to my data?

Your choices and scores are stored in your Bodhih account so you and, in a company account, your admins can review them. See bodhih.org/privacy for details.

    Can I get a refund?

Refunds follow the policy published at bodhih.org/refunds.
