Pipeline Triage: a sales forecasting simulation for the last two weeks

The CRM says you are on track. You have heard that before. Re-qualify every deal on evidence, then see which ones were never going to close.

  • Eight open deals, a $1.2M target and four decision points
  • Twelve selling blocks each time, at most six on one deal
  • A 10% discount you can give, but never take back
  • Scored on revenue, time, forecast accuracy and discounts

Quick answer

Is there a simulation that trains sales managers to qualify deals and forecast accurately?

Pipeline Triage is a Bodhih Arena micro-sim set in the last two weeks of a sales quarter. You have eight open deals, a $1.2M target and twelve selling blocks per decision point. You place your time, choose who gets a 10% discount and commit a forecast, then are scored on revenue, prioritisation, forecast accuracy and discount discipline.

What is Pipeline Triage?

Pipeline Triage is an online sales pipeline and forecasting simulation. You lead a regional team at Lattice Cloud with two weeks left in the quarter. Each of eight deals shows its CRM stage plus evidence: champion strength, whether you have met the budget holder, paperwork, days since the last reply, competitors and past slips. Each deal also has hidden true odds, and some have no approved budget. Four times you decide where your selling time and discounts go, and you commit a forecast your VP will hold you to.

Quarter end turns pipelines into guesswork

The CRM-weighted number lies politely

Value times stage probability is easy to compute and easy to fool. A deal typed in as "Negotiation" three weeks ago can be dead, and nobody wants to be the one who says so.

Time goes to the loudest deal

The biggest logo or the most anxious account manager gets the hours, while the late-stage deal that needs one more call quietly slips into next quarter.

Discounts become the closing tool

When the target is close, the 10% end-of-quarter discount goes to whoever asks. It rarely creates a budget, and it teaches buyers to wait for the last week.

The scenario

Here is the situation you walk into

You lead a regional sales team at Lattice Cloud, which sells workflow software to mid-sized companies. It is Monday of the second-to-last week of the quarter. Your target is $1.2M of new contracts, and Ines, your VP, wants your commit number by noon.

Eight deals are open, from a hotel group to a bank to an engineering firm. The CRM gives each a probability from its stage alone, and the CRM-weighted pipeline says you will make it. But the table on your screen shows more: one deal may have a strong champion and paperwork under way, while another has not replied in twelve days and has slipped before.

You have twelve selling blocks before Thursday, each about half a morning: a call, a meeting, a proposal rewrite. You can also offer up to three deals your 10% discount. Commit your forecast, place your time, and watch what the field tells you.

How it plays

5 decisions, one debrief

  1. STEP 1

Week 1, Monday: commit and allocate

Read the pipeline table, enter your commit forecast for the VP, spread your twelve selling blocks across the deals (at most six on any one), and decide whether any deal gets the discount now.

  2. STEP 2

Week 1, Thursday: the field reports back

Deals you worked on may move up a stage or start paperwork. A champion may admit the budget was never approved. Deals left alone cool a little. Place your next twelve blocks.

  3. STEP 3

    Week 2, Monday: concentrate

Some deals sign; others stop answering and drop out. This is where a discount can help a late-stage deal through procurement, and where it does almost nothing for an early one.

  4. STEP 4

    Week 2, Thursday: final call

Place your last blocks, use any discount you still want to give, and make your final forecast call. Then the quarter closes and the remaining deals sign or go dark.

  5. STEP 5

    The debrief

See what you closed against target, what your choices were worth before luck, how many blocks went to deals with no budget, and every deal's true odds at the start and the end.

Who it’s for

Who Pipeline Triage is for

  • Front-line sales managers. You commit the number and coach the team on where to spend time. This is the quarter-end judgement call, compressed into one sitting.
  • Account executives and B2B sellers. You decide every week which deals get your mornings. Pipeline Triage shows how much time on a dead deal really costs.
  • Sales operations and revenue leaders. You build the company forecast from your managers' calls. Use the simulation to agree what evidence a "commit" deal must show.
  • Business students heading into sales. It gives a realistic picture of pipeline work, forecasting and discounting before you hold a quota yourself.
Being honest

Who should skip it

It does not teach prospecting or cold outreach, and it is not a CRM training course.

What you take away

What you will do differently next quarter end

Pipeline Triage trains planning and prioritisation under pressure, the data literacy to see past a CRM label, and the honesty to forecast what the evidence supports.

You will re-qualify on day one

You will check every deal for a champion, a met budget holder, paperwork and recent replies, and take the dead ones out of your forecast early instead of on the last Friday.

You will put time where it changes the outcome

You will spot the real deal stuck just short of the line and give it your mornings, and you will test a doubtful deal with one sharp question before investing more.

You will discount late and selectively

You will keep the discount for buyers who already want to sign, and you will know it cannot create a budget that is not there.

You will commit a forecast you can defend

You will build your number deal by deal from evidence, update it as the evidence changes, and explain it to your VP without hedging.

You will separate luck from judgement

Because the debrief shows what your choices were worth before the dice, you will learn to judge a quarter by the decisions, not only by the result.

Learning goals

  • Qualify deals on evidence, not on the stage in the CRM
  • Put scarce selling time where it changes outcomes
  • Use discounts late and selectively, and forecast what the evidence supports

Skills practised: Sales forecasting, Deal qualification, Prioritisation under pressure, Decision making under uncertainty, Commercial judgement, Pipeline review.

Competencies scored

Sub-scores map to the open Bodhih Competency Spine, so results sit beside your other learning records.

What the debrief shows

  • Revenue closed against the $1.2M target, and the expected value of your choices before the dice were rolled.
  • Your commit and final call compared with what actually closed.
  • How many of your 48 selling blocks went to deals with no approved budget, and how many discounts you gave.
  • Each deal's true odds at the start and the end, which ones had no budget, what strong managers do, and the key concept of deal qualification.
Key concept

Deal qualification

Checking a deal against evidence that it can close: a real need, an approved budget, access to the person who signs, a buying process under way and a date that matters to the buyer. It turns a pipeline from a wish list into a forecast.

Use Pipeline Triage with a team

Seats are $12 each. Buy up to 25 seats online and assign them from your company admin; above that, or for a facilitated programme or an institution licence, request a quote and we activate your seats after payment.

Before a forecast or pipeline review

Have managers play it before the quarterly forecast call. The debrief gives everyone a shared test for a commit deal: champion, budget holder, paperwork, recent reply.

Sales kick-off session

Run it at a kick-off and compare forecasts across the room. Because the close dice are drawn at the start, you can talk about decisions rather than who got lucky.

A stage in a new sales manager pathway

Add it to a Bodhih pathway for first-time sales managers. Completion counts automatically, and the four sub-scores sit on the Competency Spine next to the rest of the programme.

Assessment centre or LMS assignment

Use it as a timed in-tray style exercise for sales manager candidates, or launch it from Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard or D2L through LTI 1.3 with grade passback.

    Questions buyers ask

    Pipeline Triage: FAQs

    Ask us anything

How much does Pipeline Triage cost for one person?

Pipeline Triage costs $12 for one person. Buy it online and play it in your Bodhih account immediately. Each simulation is priced and sold on its own.

What does it cost for a sales team?

Team seats are $12 each, with volume tiers that reduce the price per seat for larger teams. You can buy up to 25 seats online. For more seats, a facilitated session or an institution licence, request a quote; seats are activated after offline payment.

    How long does it take?

About 18 minutes for four decision points, the brief and the debrief. It is one of the longer micro-sims because there is a full pipeline to read.

    What is included?

The simulation, a score out of 100 with four sub-scores, a debrief that reveals each deal's true odds, a company leaderboard place when you play through your employer, and a credential at 80 or more.

    Can I replay it?

Yes. Each play is a new seeded scenario with a different mix of stages, champions, budgets and values across the eight deals.

    Is there a certificate?

Score 80 or more and you earn the Arena Micro-sim Mastery credential for Pipeline Triage, an Open Badges 3.0 credential with a public verification page and an Add to LinkedIn button.

Can we run it from Canvas, Moodle or another LMS?

Yes. It launches from Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard and D2L via LTI 1.3 and passes the score back to your gradebook. It also works as a stage in a Bodhih pathway.

    What device should I use?

A laptop or desktop browser is best, because the pipeline table has many columns. Tablets work well; phones work too but need more scrolling.

    Who is it designed for?

Sales managers who commit forecasts, account executives who manage their own pipeline, sales operations staff and students preparing for sales roles.

How is it different from a sales case study?

A case study describes someone else's pipeline. Here you place your own time, give or hold your own discounts and commit a number, and the debrief shows which deals were alive all along.

    What data do you keep?

Your decisions, scores and debrief are kept in your Bodhih account, visible to you and to company admins when you play through a company account. Read more at bodhih.org/privacy.

What if I want a refund?

Refunds follow the policy at bodhih.org/refunds.

    Ready when you are

Run one quarter end where the mistakes are free

Qualify on evidence, spend time where it counts, discount only where it helps and commit a number you can defend. Play it before your next forecast call, then compare your commit with what actually closed. Buy a seat for yourself, or seats for every manager who commits a number.
