What is Proctored exam?

Also called: Invigilated exam · Supervised exam · Online proctored exam

Definition

A proctored exam is an assessment taken under supervision, so that the issuing organisation can be confident the candidate is who they claim to be and completed the exam without unauthorised help. Supervision can be in person by an invigilator, live online by a remote proctor watching through webcam and screen-share, or recorded and reviewed later. Proctoring is used when a result leads to a certification or other credential that employers and clients will rely on.

A proctored exam typically includes identity verification before the start, rules on permitted materials, a time limit, and monitoring during the exam. Online proctoring may use webcam, microphone and screen recording, a check of the room, and a locked-down browser, with flagged events reviewed by a person. The exam itself is usually drawn from a larger item bank so candidates do not see identical papers.

For corporate L&D and credentialing, proctoring is what separates a certificate that means “passed an assessed exam” from one that means “clicked through a quiz”. It matters most when a credential is shared with employers or clients. The five Bodhih Applied AI courses end in a proctored certification exam with a pass rule of at least 70% overall and at least 60% in every domain, so a strong score in one area cannot hide a weak one.

Common mistakes: proctoring low-stakes quizzes, which adds friction without benefit; poor communication of rules and technical requirements before the exam; and relying on proctoring to compensate for a weak exam that only tests recall.

An example at work

A finance executive in Mumbai completes an online certification course and books its proctored exam. She verifies her identity, shows her desk on webcam, and completes the timed exam under remote supervision; her credential later shows a pass with scores above 60% in every domain.

More about Proctored exam

What does a proctored exam mean?

It means the exam is supervised, either by a person in the room or by a remote proctor online, to confirm the candidate’s identity and that they work without unauthorised help. The supervision is what lets the result be trusted for a certification.

How does an online proctored exam work?

You usually verify your identity with a photo ID, show your room and desk on webcam, and take the exam in a browser with your webcam, microphone and screen monitored or recorded. A proctor watches live or reviews the recording, and any rule breaks are flagged and investigated.
