Buyer's guide · HR certifications

Best HR certifications to get online in 2026 (global and India): 15 compared

Vendor facts checked · 15 options

The short answer

The best HR certification depends on where you work and your experience. With none, start with HRCI’s aPHR ($400, online-proctored). For US-linked roles take SHRM-CP or PHR; for multinationals, GPHR; for UK, Irish or Gulf employers, CIPD Level 5. In India, XLRI and IIM programmes carry weight; Bodhih’s People Management certification (₹24,999) is graded on your own HR work.

HR “certifications” are really four different things: exam-based credentials that must be renewed (SHRM, HRCI, ATD, WorldatWork), regulated qualifications that come with membership (CIPD), university or institute certificates of completion (Cornell, XLRI, IIM), and provider certificates assessed on work (AIHR, Bodhih). Compare like with like, then pick by the market you want to work in.

Fees, formats and rules below come from each provider’s own pages, checked on 24 October 2026, in the currency the provider publishes. Nothing has been converted.

How we built this list

  • Included: HR and people-management credentials an individual can earn largely online today, from professional bodies, universities and training providers.
  • Checked for each: eligibility, format (exam, course or both; remote or test centre), cost, recertification and where it is recognised.
  • Where a provider did not publish a fact (study hours, prep-course price), it is left out rather than estimated.
  • Order: Bodhih’s certification is ours, so it is listed first and labelled. The rest are alphabetical by provider. This is a shortlist with facts, not a ranking.

Disclosure: Bodhih publishes this guide and sells the product marked “Our product”. We receive nothing from the other providers listed, and links to them are not affiliate links.

How to choose

Choose by where you want to work

Employers recognise different credentials in different markets. Start with the market, then match your experience.

Where you work or want to workMost recognised
United States or US-headquartered companiesSHRM-CP / SHRM-SCP; PHR / SPHR
UK, Ireland, GulfCIPD Level 3 / Level 5 / Level 7
Multinational or global capability centreGPHR; PHRi / SPHRi
India, domestic employersXLRI, IIM and other institute programmes; practical certificates

Choose by what you need to prove

An exam-based credential proves knowledge and keeps you current through recertification. A regulated qualification proves study to a defined level and brings membership. A work-based certificate proves you can produce real HR outputs. Many HR professionals combine one of each over a career.

Common questions

Questions people ask next

Which HR certification is best for beginners with no experience?

HRCI’s aPHR (and the international aPHRi) need no HR experience and cost $400, with online proctoring. CIPD Level 3 is the UK entry route. Bodhih’s People Management pathways also have no entry requirement and are assessed on practical work.

SHRM-CP or PHR: which is better?

Both are respected US credentials. SHRM-CP tests competencies and situational judgement; PHR tests technical HR knowledge including US employment law. SHRM-CP costs $399 to $499 and is taken at a Prometric centre in 2026; PHR costs $495 and can be taken remotely.

Which HR certification is best in India?

For Indian employers, institute programmes such as XLRI’s PGCHRM (₹4,00,000) and IIM Calcutta’s EPHRM (₹3,66,000 + GST) carry weight. For multinationals, SHRM, GPHR or PHRi are widely known. Bodhih’s People Management certification (₹24,999 + GST) is a lower-cost practical option.

Can I get an HR certification fully online?

Yes. HRCI exams (aPHR, PHR, SPHR, GPHR) can be taken with remote proctoring, many CIPD centres teach online, and AIHR, eCornell and Bodhih are fully online. SHRM exams in the 2026 windows are in person at test centres.

Why is Bodhih listed first?

Because it is our certification and we say so. The rest are listed alphabetically, facts come from their own pages, and every entry has a “watch out for” line.
