What is the difference between an LMS and an LXP?

By Bodhih Training Solutions, Bengaluru · Updated 2 October 2026

The short answer

An LMS (learning management system) is built to assign, deliver, track and prove training: who must complete what, by when, with what result. An LXP (learning experience platform) is built for discovery: recommending content from many sources based on interests and role. Organisations with compliance, onboarding or certification needs need an LMS first. An LXP adds value when you have lots of content and want self-directed learning. Some platforms combine elements of both.

How do an LMS and an LXP compare?

The two overlap, but their starting points differ.

AspectLMSLXP
Main purposeManage and prove required trainingHelp people discover and pursue learning
Who drives itAdministrators and managers assignLearners choose, guided by recommendations
ContentCourses, SCORM packages, documents, assessmentsAggregated content from many internal and external sources
TrackingCompletion, scores, due dates, certificationEngagement, interests, activity
Typical usesCompliance, onboarding, certification, mandatory trainingContinuous development, curated libraries
StandardsSCORM, often xAPI, cmi5, LTIOften xAPI and content integrations

When do you need an LMS?

Choose an LMS when you must be able to show evidence.

  • Mandatory or compliance training with deadlines and audit trails
  • Onboarding programmes that must be completed in order
  • Certification and recertification with expiry dates
  • SCORM content that needs reliable completion tracking
  • Reports for managers, auditors or clients

When does an LXP make sense?

An LXP helps when you already have a large amount of content, from libraries, internal experts and the web, and want people to find what is relevant without being assigned it. It suits cultures that encourage self-directed learning. It rarely replaces an LMS where proof of completion is required.

Is the Bodhih LMS an LMS or an LXP?

The Bodhih LMS is an LMS. It plays SCORM 1.2 and 2004, hosts PDF, Word, PowerPoint, video and audio, issues verifiable credentials and Open Badges and keeps an audit trail. Automations for assignment, reminders, escalation, expiry and recertification come with the Growth band, and competency reporting with Scale. It also includes a marketplace for courses. Bands start at ₹99,000 a year plus GST for up to 50 seats.

Where does an LRS fit?

A learning record store (LRS) stores xAPI statements, records of learning activity from many systems. It can sit behind an LMS or an LXP. In the Bodhih LMS, xAPI is available in the Scale band, and an xAPI LRS is on the roadmap.

Common questions

Questions people ask next

Can an LMS do what an LXP does?

Partly. Modern LMSs include catalogues, groups and learning pathways that support self-directed learning. They usually do not aggregate external content or personalise recommendations as deeply as an LXP. For most organisations with compliance needs, an LMS covers the essentials.

Do we need both an LMS and an LXP?

Large organisations sometimes run both: the LMS for required training and proof of completion, the LXP for discovery and self-directed learning. Smaller organisations usually start with an LMS and add discovery features later if people ask for them.

Which is better for compliance training?

An LMS. Compliance training needs assignments, due dates, reminders, completion records, expiry, recertification and an audit trail. Those are core LMS functions, and they produce the evidence an auditor or regulator will ask to see.

Does an LXP support SCORM?

Some do, but reliable SCORM tracking is a core LMS function. If SCORM completion and score data matter to you, ask any platform to show exactly how it launches and records SCORM 1.2 and 2004 packages, using one of your own.

What is the difference between an LMS and an LRS?

An LMS manages and delivers training to learners: courses, assignments, tracking and reports. An LRS only stores xAPI learning records, often sent from several systems. An LRS has no learner-facing courses or assignments of its own.

Is the Bodhih LMS suitable for training companies?

Yes. Branches and sub-portals let reseller clients each have their own address, look and admins on one contract, and the platform includes a marketplace, checkout and invoicing in INR and USD. Companies, company admins and trainers are all supported roles.
