How do you become an LLM engineer?
By Bodhih Training Solutions, Bengaluru · UpdatedThe short answer
To become an LLM engineer, learn Python and APIs well, then learn to build three things on large language models: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) that answers from your own documents, agents that call tools safely, and evaluation that measures whether the system works. Build a real project end to end and be ready to explain your design choices. Bodhih’s LLM Engineering (Level 3) teaches this in 45 hours over 70 days, with a six-week capstone, for ₹64,999 plus GST.
What skills does an LLM engineer need?
The role sits between software engineering and machine learning.
| Skill area | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Python and APIs | Writing clean code, calling model APIs, handling errors, cost and latency |
| Prompting and structured output | Instructions, examples and schemas that make output reliable |
| Retrieval-augmented generation | Chunking, embeddings, search and grounding answers in sources |
| Agents and tools | Letting a model call functions, with limits and checks |
| Evaluation | Test sets, metrics and human review to measure quality and catch regressions |
| Safety and responsible AI | Handling hallucination, data privacy and misuse |
What is a sensible roadmap?
Most people follow roughly this order.
- Learn Python to a working level, including data handling
- Learn core machine learning ideas: training versus test data, overfitting, baselines and metrics
- Call a model API and get structured, reliable output
- Build a RAG application over a real document set
- Add tool use and a simple agent, with guardrails
- Build an evaluation set and measure changes before shipping them
- Complete a project end to end and explain it to someone technical
What does Bodhih’s LLM Engineering course cover?
LLM Engineering is Level 3 of Bodhih’s AI/ML pathway: 45 hours over 70 days, online. It has five modules on RAG, agents and evaluation, a six-week capstone with checkpoints, a recorded viva with two evaluators, a mock exam and a final exam under exam conditions. The price is ₹64,999 plus GST, or ₹52,000 plus GST per company seat. It assumes you already code in Python; Level 2 (Applied AI/ML Practitioner) is the preparation route.
Why does evaluation matter so much?
Language model output varies, so a system that looks right in a demo can fail on real inputs. Evaluation, meaning a fixed set of test cases, clear metrics and human review, is how you know whether a change made things better or worse. It is the skill that most separates a production engineer from a prototype builder.

Questions people ask next
Do I need a computer science degree to become an LLM engineer?
Not necessarily. You need strong Python, an understanding of machine learning basics and evidence that you can build and evaluate a working system. A degree helps, but a well-documented project you can explain in depth also carries real weight.
Is prompt engineering the same as LLM engineering?
No. Prompt engineering is writing instructions that get good output from a model. LLM engineering includes that, but also retrieval, tool use, evaluation, cost, latency, error handling and reliability in a working application that real users depend on.
How long does it take to become an LLM engineer?
It depends on your starting point. An experienced developer can learn the core of RAG, agents and evaluation in a few months. Bodhih’s Level 3 runs over 70 days; someone new to Python should allow time for Levels 1 and 2 first.
What is RAG?
Retrieval-augmented generation is a pattern where the system first searches your documents for relevant passages, then asks the model to answer using them. It reduces made-up answers and lets the model use information it was not trained on.
Do LLM engineers need to train their own models?
Usually not. Most LLM engineering builds on existing models through APIs. Fine-tuning is sometimes used for specific needs, but retrieval, prompting and evaluation solve most problems more cheaply, are faster to change and are easier to maintain over time.
What does the Level 3 capstone involve?
A six-week project with checkpoints, followed by a recorded viva in which two evaluators ask you to explain and defend your design choices. Together they show you can build, evaluate and reason about a real LLM system, not just follow a tutorial.
How much does Bodhih’s LLM Engineering cost?
LLM Engineering (Level 3) costs ₹64,999 plus 18% GST for an individual, or ₹52,000 plus GST per company seat. It runs for 45 hours over 70 days and includes the capstone, viva, mock exam and final exam.
