How do I start and run a private tutoring business?
Choose a niche you can teach well, price from your effective hourly rate, send written terms before the first session, start every student with a diagnostic and agreed goals, run structured sessions, report each term, and keep safeguarding, data and the books in order. The Tutoring Business Kit from Bodhih Training provides the tools for every step.

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.
Your prices look fine and earn little
A home visit at a good hourly rate can be your worst-paid session once the drive and the preparation are counted. Without the arithmetic, you cannot see it.
Cancellations and late payments become arguments
When nothing was written down, every late cancellation is a negotiation. Families are not being difficult; they were never told.
You teach what you assume, not what they need
Without a diagnostic and agreed goals, the first month goes on topics the student already knew while the real gap stays hidden.
You are unsure of the rules
Background checks, safeguarding, data protection and tax registration all apply to tutors, differ by country and change. Guessing feels risky.
The diary fills until you are exhausted
Each new student seems manageable. Then preparation moves to midnight and Sunday disappears.
Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.
Picture the first Friday afternoon of term. You open the workbook, and Settings already holds your rates, your term dates and your cancellation rule. The sessions you logged each evening this week have worked out their own values, and the invoices due next week are listed with their dates.
As you open the Progress sheet, you can see where each student started and what their first checkpoint will test. Every family has signed your terms, read your online-session rules and chosen what they consent to. Your safeguarding contacts are written on a card in your bag.
Next month, when a family asks how things are going, you send a short note after the checkpoint with something specific to say. At the end of term, the report letter takes twenty minutes because the evidence is already in the sheet. And when you check the Dashboard, you know which hours of your week actually pay.
Whether you start with the rate calculator tonight or the terms template tomorrow morning, the files work together, and every one arrives with sample rows from a worked first term so you can see what good looks like before you type your own.

The diagnostic is the most useful hour in tutoring. Its job is to find out what the student can already do, where it breaks down and how they work. 1. Prepare a short task set of fifteen to twenty items from easy to harder, grouped by skill, from the student's curriculum. You will reuse the same items at each checkpoint, so the comparison is fair. 2. Start with five minutes of conversation: what feels hard, what feels fine, what they enjoy. 3. Work through the tasks easiest first, and stop before frustration. Watch how they work as much as what they get right: do they read the whole question, recall facts quickly, explain their method, check, rush, give up? 4. Name gaps as steps, not topics. "Collecting the unknown on one side" is useful. "Algebra" is not. 5. Feed back strengths first, then two or three gaps and how you will work on them.
The honest comparison

The Tutoring Business Kit: FAQs
Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my linkHow much should I charge for tutoring?
Work out what you need per year, then divide by all the hours tutoring takes, not just the hours you teach. The calculator shows your rate floor per teaching hour and the effective hourly rate each session type earns once preparation and travel are counted. Check comparable local and online rates to understand how families will compare you, but price from your own numbers.
Can I use this with my staff, team or fellow tutors?
Yes, within your own tutoring business under the personal licence: you and up to two partners can use the tools for your own students. For a company, an agency or several sites, ask about a company or multi-site licence at solutions@bodhih.com.
Does it work in my country?
The method is universal: pricing, policies, diagnostics, sessions, reports, safeguarding habits and the books work anywhere, in any currency. The dated country sheet covers the UK, US, India, Australia, Singapore, the UAE and Canada. Background checks, safeguarding duties, data and tax rules differ and change, so check them locally.
Is this legal, tax or safeguarding advice?
No. The kit is educational. Templates are plain-words starting points for a lawyer to check, money tools are planning aids for your accountant, and safeguarding guidance never replaces local law, official guidance or your school's safeguarding lead. It makes no promise of income, students, grades or results.
I teach in a school. Can I tutor privately?
Many schools and boards restrict private tutoring by their teachers, especially of their own pupils, and some forbid it entirely. Check your school's policy in writing before you start. The kit shows how to keep your tutoring separate from school time, systems and contacts.
Does it cover online tutoring?
Yes. It covers platform and whiteboard set-up, links sent to parents, recording only with written consent, online-session rules for students and parents, and what to do if something inappropriate happens on screen.
Do I need a background check to tutor?
In many places you do, or families will expect one. The checks differ by country (DBS in the UK, police verification in India, Working With Children Checks in Australia, vulnerable sector checks in Canada). The dated country sheet has verified notes; your local screening body has the final word.
How do I measure my starting point before I begin?
Measure your starting point with three AssessAll assessments on assessall.com: the Small Business Operating Decision Assessment for Shop, Service and Studio Owners, Pricing and Discount Discipline, and Study Skills and Learning Strategies, which helps you think about the study habits you will teach.
How do I turn this into a development plan for myself?
Set two or three goals for your practice this term, such as a rate review or a first small group, and plan them with the WOOP method explained on Jobulary (jobulary.com), which helps you set goals you actually reach.
Can I edit the templates and spreadsheets?
Yes. Every Word file uses [PLACEHOLDERS] and a header line for your business name, logo and contact details, and the workbooks open in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice. Sample rows are clearly marked so you can delete them.
How much does The Tutoring Business Kit cost?
₹999 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $29 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.
How do I get the files after paying?
Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.
What software do I need?
Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.
Can I get a refund?
Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.
Can my company buy this for a team?
Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
