Quick answer

How do teachers assess fairly and write good report card comments?

Give every assessment a purpose, check learning daily, plan tests with a blueprint, mark to an agreed scheme, moderate a sample, grade with clear weights and no hidden zeros, analyse questions to reteach, then write specific, kind, honest comments. The Classroom Assessment and Report Card Kit from Bodhih Training gives you a tool for each step.

Sound familiar?

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.

Grades you cannot explain

Formative quizzes, missing-work zeros and late penalties are mixed into one number. When a parent asks what a grade means, the honest answer is 'it depends'.

Hours of comments nobody reads

Long written comments take evenings and come back unread. The same errors reappear two weeks later.

Marks that differ by marker

Two classes, one test, a 15-point gap, and nobody can say whether it is the teaching or the marking.

Report season dread

Thirty comments, a word limit, a Friday deadline, and by the fifth one they all sound the same.

Now imagine this

Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.

Imagine the Monday after a unit test. As you open the gradebook, the weighted grades are already there, missing work is listed with what you have tried, and the Question View shows the two ideas the class found hardest. You know what tomorrow's first twenty minutes will be.

When you hand the tests back, students read a whole-class feedback sheet, find the code on their script and fix their work in green while you talk to the five who need you most. Whether you start with the exit-ticket slips tomorrow or the gradebook tonight, every step has a file waiting.

Picture the moderation meeting: six scripts compared blind, all within tolerance, one note added to the mark scheme, done in thirty minutes. Your marks now mean the same thing as your colleagues'.

And report week: you choose a strength, a next step and a learning habit from the comment bank, add one sentence only you could write, read it aloud and move on. Three minutes a comment, each one specific, kind and honest, with no student names ever leaving the school's systems.

A taste of Chapter 7

Jake teaches US history in Ohio. A student with test scores in the 80s had a C on the report because of two missing homework assignments entered as zeros. Her father asked a fair question at the parent meeting: "Does a C mean she doesn't know the history, or that she didn't hand in two worksheets?" Jake realised the grade could not answer him. A grade should report, as clearly as possible, what a student has learned against the standard. Everything else (lateness, effort, missing work, behaviour) is important information, but mixing it into an achievement grade makes the grade harder to read. Grading researchers such as Thomas Guskey have long argued that zeros on a percentage scale distort averages, because one zero can outweigh several good results. Your school's policy decides how missing work counts. Whatever it decides, the workbook makes the effect visible.

Questions buyers ask

The Classroom Assessment and Report Card Kit: FAQs

Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my link

Can I use this with my department, colleagues or students?

Yes, within your own school or tutoring business under the personal licence: share the print pack with your classes and use the forms in your department meetings. Whole-school, multi-school and group licences are available through solutions@bodhih.com.

Does it work in my country?

The method is universal and the workbook works with any grading scale. The dated rules sheet summarises grading, student-data, safeguarding and AI guidance for the UK, US, India, Australia, Singapore and the UAE, checked in October 2026. Laws and board rules change, so check your school's policy and the official source.

Does it work with my grading system?

Yes. You type your own boundaries on the Grade Scale sheet: letters, numbers such as GCSE 9 to 1 or IB 1 to 7, levels or descriptors. For criterion-based or competency-based reporting, such as IB criteria or CBSE Holistic Progress Card approaches, the e-book shows how to keep criteria separate rather than averaging them.

How do I write report card comments quickly without them all sounding the same?

Start from evidence, then pick one strength, one next step and one learning habit from the 128-comment bank by ID, add one sentence only you could write, and read it aloud. The workbook builds the draft and counts the words.

How should missing work count in a grade?

Your school's policy decides. The workbook records missing work as missing and leaves it out of the average by default, so you chase it on the Missing Work sheet; one setting switches to zeros if your policy requires them. Chapter 7 shows why zeros can distort an average.

Can I use AI to mark work or write report comments?

AI can help draft questions, rubric wording and comment phrasing, using your school's approved tool and placeholders instead of names. It should never set a mark, grade or integrity judgement on its own, and every word a student or family sees must be read by you.

Is this safeguarding, legal or data protection advice?

No. It is educational and practical. Your school's safeguarding, data protection, assessment and academic integrity policies come first, along with your designated safeguarding lead and local law.

Does the kit promise better grades or exam results?

No. It gives you a method and tools to assess fairly, give feedback students act on and report clearly. Results depend on many things, including teaching, students and context.

I am a private tutor. Is it useful for me?

Yes. Use the calculator for baseline and progress checks, the formative sheets in sessions, and the tutor progress notes in the message library to report evidenced progress to families.

How can I measure my starting point?

AssessAll offers separate assessments that fit this job: Marking Consistency and Assessment Design Assessment for Teachers, Trainers and Assessors, Written Feedback Quality Assessment for Managers, Teachers and Reviewers, and Data Interpretation (Tables and Charts). They are optional and sold separately at assessall.com.

How do I turn this into a development plan?

Use the 30/60/90 day plan on the Start-here map, then see Jobulary's individual development plan at jobulary.com/individual-development-plan to turn the skills into a measured plan for you or your department.

How much does The Classroom Assessment and Report Card Kit cost?

₹999 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $29 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.

How do I get the files after paying?

Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.

What software do I need?

Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.

Can I get a refund?

Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.

Can my company buy this for a team?

Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
