Quick answer

How do I plan a unit of work and its lessons?

Start from the official outcomes, count the lessons you really have, then plan backwards: the big idea, the evidence of learning, then a lesson sequence with spaced retrieval, hinge questions and a flex lesson. The Unit and Lesson Planning Studio from Bodhih Training gives you the planner, canvas, templates and calculator for each step.

Sound familiar?

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.

The year runs out in March

The plan was built for timetabled lessons. Exams, closures, events and trips take weeks, and the last units get squeezed into worksheets and videos.

Lessons that do not add up to a unit

Each lesson is fine on its own, but the activities are not aimed at the same understanding, and the end-of-unit task shows it.

Planning from the textbook

The textbook's version of the curriculum drifts from the official outcomes, and competency or context-based questions catch students out.

Three lessons for one class

Mixed-ability, multilingual and large classes push teachers to write separate versions of every lesson, which nobody can sustain.

Starting from a blank page every September

Plans live on personal drives, nobody records what worked, and the department plans the same unit four times.

Now imagine this

Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.

Imagine opening the Curriculum and Unit Planner in August and seeing, term by term, the lessons you really have next to the lessons each unit needs, with every unit that will not fit flagged months before it matters.

As you plan your next unit on the backward-design canvas, you will notice how quickly the lessons fall into place once the big idea and the evidence are written down. The lesson sequence then tells you which earlier lesson each starter reviews, and whether the gap is useful.

When you plan tomorrow's lesson on one page, the desk card on your table keeps the structure in front of you: starter, explanation, worked examples, guided practice, hinge question, practice, exit check. The hinge question tells you, in a minute, who is ready to move on.

And after each assessment point, you will record what you found and what you changed, so next year starts from this year's best version. Whether you begin with the term calendar tonight or the canvas tomorrow morning, the first hour is mapped out for you.

A taste of Chapter 6

In 1998, Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam of King's College London published Inside the Black Box, a short booklet summarising their review of research on classroom assessment. Their argument, in our words: when teachers use evidence of what students understand during teaching, and adapt what they do next, learning improves. Assessment is not only what happens at the end. It is a constant loop of asking, seeing and adjusting. The Education Endowment Foundation's Teaching and Learning Toolkit rates feedback as high impact for very low cost, with an average of about six months' additional progress. Hattie's Visible Learning, published in 2009, also ranked feedback among the larger influences; read it alongside its critics, who point out that averaging effect sizes from very different studies can mislead. The common thread across all of them: find out what students are thinking, and act on it.

Questions buyers ask

The Unit and Lesson Planning Studio: FAQs

Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my link

Can I use this with my students and colleagues?

Yes. Under the personal licence you can use the kit in your own teaching, with your students, and share the plans you make with colleagues in your own department. Whole-school, multi-site and trust licences are available via solutions@bodhih.com.

Does it work in my country and curriculum?

The planning method works in any curriculum, and the planner takes your own outcome codes and strands. The dated sheet covers named frameworks and safeguarding and data rules as at October 2026, but curricula and laws change and differ locally, so check the official documents, your school's policies and your safeguarding lead.

How do I plan a unit of work?

Unpack the official outcomes, check the lessons you really have, then plan backwards: write the big idea and essential question, place the assessment points and describe what secure looks like, and only then sequence the lessons with spaced retrieval and a flex lesson. The canvas and planner take you through each step.

What should a good lesson plan include?

A learning intention and success criteria, a retrieval starter on older material, an explanation in small steps with a visual, worked examples, guided practice with checks, a hinge question, independent practice and an exit check. The one-page plan and desk card hold this structure.

How do I differentiate without writing three lessons?

Keep one learning intention for everyone, choose one or two scaffolds that remove the main barrier and plan how they fade, and add a challenge that goes deeper rather than longer. The Differentiation Bank holds starter scaffolds tagged by need and UDL area.

Is it safe to use AI for lesson planning?

AI can draft resources, examples and quizzes, but a teacher must check every item for accuracy, age-appropriateness, bias and copyright before any student or parent sees it, and no student data goes into tools your school has not approved. The kit's prompt pack and department charter build this in.

Does the kit promise better grades or results?

No. It helps you plan, sequence, check and review teaching well. Results depend on many things beyond any plan, and nothing in the kit is a claim about grades, exam results or admissions.

Does it cover safeguarding?

The kit points to your school's safeguarding policy and designated safeguarding lead throughout, keeps student data out of the planner and AI tools, and uses student work only under your consent policy. It does not replace your school's policy or local law.

How can I measure my starting point?

If you want to measure your starting point, AssessAll offers related assessments sold separately: Lesson Design and Questioning Technique, Instructional Design Work Sample for Trainers, Instructional Designers and Subject-Matter Experts, and AI Draft Supervision: Reviewing What the Machine Wrote. They suit teachers who want feedback on lesson design, questioning and reviewing AI-drafted material.

How do I turn this into a development plan?

Use the kit's 30/60/90 day plan for your planning system. For a structured personal development plan around one teaching skill, such as hinge questions or retrieval starters, see how a Jobulary development plan works at jobulary.com.

How much does The Unit and Lesson Planning Studio cost?

₹999 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $29 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.

How do I get the files after paying?

Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.

What software do I need?

Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.

Can I get a refund?

Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.

Can my company buy this for a team?

Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
