What is Learning pathway?

Also called: Learning path · Learning journey · Curriculum path

Definition

A learning pathway is a structured sequence of learning activities, practice and assessments designed to move a learner from a known starting point to a defined outcome. A good pathway begins with a diagnostic or entry requirement, orders modules so each builds on the last, includes practice on real work, and ends with an assessment that confirms the outcome. In an LMS, a pathway is usually configured as an ordered set of courses with prerequisites, deadlines, reminders and a completion rule or credential.

A pathway answers three questions: where does the learner start, where must they end up, and what is the shortest reliable route between the two. Designers map the target competencies, sequence content from foundational to applied, and place checkpoints along the way. Many pathways branch, letting learners skip material they already know based on a diagnostic result.

For organisations, pathways turn a catalogue into a plan. Instead of asking employees to browse hundreds of courses, L&D assigns a pathway for a role, such as new manager, sales executive or data analyst, and tracks progress against it. This makes onboarding, upskilling and certification programmes consistent across teams and locations, and it gives managers a clear view of who is on track.

Common mistakes include building a pathway that is simply a long list of courses, with no assessment at the end, and ignoring what the learner already knows. Another is ending the pathway at completion. The real end point is evidence that the learner can now do the work, ideally re-checked a few months later.

Key points

  • Starts from a known baseline and ends at a defined outcome.
  • Orders activities so each builds on the last.
  • Includes practice and assessment, not just content.
  • Configured in an LMS with prerequisites, deadlines and reminders.
  • Can branch based on diagnostic results.

An example at work

A Bengaluru GCC assigns new team leads a pathway that starts with a diagnostic, continues through modules on feedback and delegation, requires two work products reviewed by a senior manager, and ends with a credential.

More about Learning pathway

What is the difference between a course and a learning pathway?

A course covers one topic or skill. A learning pathway is a sequence that may include several courses, practice tasks, assessments and a credential, designed to reach a larger outcome such as being ready for a role. A pathway sets the order, the checkpoints and the finish line; a course is one step within it.

How do you design a learning pathway for employees?

Define the role outcome and the competencies it needs, measure where learners start, sequence activities from foundational to applied, add practice on real work and checkpoints, and finish with an assessment. Then configure it in your LMS with prerequisites and reminders, and re-measure a few months later to check that the change has lasted.
