Quick answer

How do you start a paid newsletter?

Pick one reader and a one-sentence promise, publish free on a schedule you can keep, then add a paid tier with a clear benefit, honest prices and a written paywall rule. Measure net growth, conversion, churn and MRR monthly. The Paid Newsletter Business Kit from Bodhih Training gives you the workbook, templates and dated rules for each step.

Sound familiar?

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.

You write well but the business around it is guesswork

Prices copied from someone else, no idea what churn is costing you, fees you have never added up. The writing is the easy part; the system is missing.

Your paid tier launched and then flattened

New readers arrive and paid numbers do not move. Without cancellation reasons in readers' words and a monthly review, you cannot see the leak.

Issues go out late, or not at all

Wednesday night with a blank page is not a workflow. A calendar, a backlog and four templates make the week predictable.

Rules you half-know

Authentication records, one-click unsubscribe, consent law, sponsor labels, AI disclosure and VAT on digital subscriptions all matter, and they differ by country.

Now imagine this

Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.

Picture next Monday morning. You open the Newsletter Business Workbook, type last week's new free readers, unsubscribes and new paid readers on the Subscriber Growth sheet, and the four-week average tells you whether growth is real. Ten minutes, and you know where you stand.

When you fill in the positioning canvas, you notice how much easier every later decision becomes: what to write, what to charge, where your next readers are. As you run three prices through the Subscription Economics Calculator, you see the net value of each payment after fees and how many paid readers a target would need, as a scenario you can test rather than a hope.

Imagine the next cancellation. Instead of a shrug, the reader gets a one-question reply from the message library, their reason goes into the Churn and Cancellations sheet in their own words, and at the end of the month the Churn View shows you which fix matters most.

Whether you start with the first hour on the Start-here map tonight or with the welcome sequence tomorrow, every step has a file: templates branded with your publication name in five minutes, a pre-send checklist that keeps sponsors labelled and facts checked, and a dated sheet that tells you which rules to check where your readers live.

A taste of Chapter 7

Monthly churn is the share of paid readers at the start of a month who left during it. If you start the month with 100 paid readers and 4 cancel, churn is 4%. The Paid Subscribers sheet calculates it every month. Lifetime value (LTV) is roughly what a paid reader is worth over their time with you, after fees. A simple estimate: net revenue per paid reader per month divided by monthly churn. At 5% monthly churn, an average reader stays about 20 months; at 2.5%, about 40. Halving churn roughly doubles LTV, which is why, once a paid tier is established, retention work often deserves more of your time than growth work. The calculator's Churn Test sheet shows how many new paid readers you need each month just to stand still at different churn rates.

Questions buyers ask

The Paid Newsletter Business Kit: FAQs

Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my link

Does this kit work with Substack, beehiiv, Ghost or Kit?

Yes. The method and tools work with any newsletter platform, and the dated sheet lists fees and features from several platforms' own pages as of October 2026. Bodhih is not affiliated with any platform, so always check the platform's current terms before you choose.

How many subscribers do I need before I launch a paid tier?

There is no reliable universal number. The Subscription Economics Calculator shows how many paid readers your own target needs at your prices, fees and churn, and how large a free list supports that at your assumed upgrade rate. Many writers publish free for some months first so readers rely on the work before they are asked to pay.

How should I price a paid newsletter?

Start from the net value of each payment after fees, then test monthly, annual, founding, group and regional options in the calculator's Price Test sheet. Write a price-change rule before launch: how much notice you give and whether existing readers keep their price.

What is a good churn rate for a paid newsletter?

Published averages mix very different niches and platforms, so the kit gives no benchmark. Set your own target from your first eight weeks of paid data, track monthly churn on the Paid Subscribers sheet and log every cancellation reason in the reader's words.

Can I use this with my team, editors or contributors?

Yes, within your own publication or business under the personal licence: share the workbook and templates with the editors, contributors or assistants who work on your newsletter. Company, network and multi-publication licences are available from solutions@bodhih.com.

Does it work in my country?

The method works anywhere and the tools work in any currency. The dated sheet covers platform fees, mailbox rules, consent law, subscription rules, tax on digital subscriptions and disclosure for the US, UK, EU, Canada, India, Australia and others, but laws change and differ locally, so check your adviser and the official sources for where your readers live.

Is this legal or tax advice?

No. The kit is educational. Policies, notices and the privacy outline are templates to adapt with a lawyer, and tax guidance is general orientation for a conversation with your accountant.

How do I measure my starting point?

If you want to measure related skills, AssessAll offers the Executive Summary and One-Page Brief Writing Assessment, the Customer Renewal and Account Risk Assessment and Misinformation & Media Literacy (separate products, not included in the kit).

How do I turn this into a plan I actually keep?

Use the 12-week calendar and the monthly subscriber review, and if you want a personal development plan around your writing business, Jobulary's guide 'A development plan that survives week six' is a good companion read.

How does the kit handle AI?

The AI prompt pack has 28 prompts for research leads, summaries, headlines and editing, each with what to check. A human review rule runs through the kit: you write, check facts and take editorial responsibility, and you disclose AI use where your policy, platform or the law requires it.

How much does The Paid Newsletter Business Kit cost?

₹999 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $29 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.

How do I get the files after paying?

Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.

What software do I need?

Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.

Can I get a refund?

Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.

Can my company buy this for a team?

Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
