Quick answer

How do I calculate landed cost and set an export price?

List every cost from factory gate to the buyer's door, share shipment costs across SKUs by weight, volume or value, add duty on the correct customs value and any import tax you cannot reclaim, then divide cost at your Incoterm by one minus margin and fees. The Landed Cost and Export Pricing System from Bodhih Training does each step in one workbook.

Sound familiar?

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.

Prices built on factory cost plus a habit markup

A 40% markup on factory cost is a 29% margin before any freight, duty or bank charge. Many first export orders look profitable on the quote and lose money on the shipment.

Freight quotes you cannot compare

One forwarder sends a total, another sends twelve lines with different bases. Without a line-by-line costing you cannot tell which is cheaper or which charges will change before booking.

Courier and air bills that do not match the estimate

Carriers bill the greater of actual and volumetric weight. A bulky carton can cost a fifth more than its weight suggests, and the difference only shows up on the invoice.

Prices that do not survive the shelf

A price that covers your costs can still be too high once VAT, the retailer's margin and the distributor's margin are added. You find out when the buyer goes quiet.

Currency and validity surprises

Quotes in the buyer's currency with long validity and no band expose your margin to every move in the exchange rate and every freight increase before booking.

Now imagine this

Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.

Imagine the next enquiry arriving on a Monday. Instead of reaching for last year's markup, you open the workbook, pick the market and type the forwarder's lines into the Cost Lines sheet. By lunchtime you can see the landed cost per unit for every SKU on the shipment, and you know which layer of the waterfall is doing the damage.

As you read the Price Ladder, you see your price at EXW, FOB, CIF, DAP and DDP side by side. When the buyer asks whether a FOB price would be cheaper, you can show exactly what the delivered term adds. When you type the planned shelf price into the Margin Chain, you find out before you quote whether the distributor and retailer can make their margins at your price.

Then you send a quote that leaves nothing to ask: the Incoterm with its place and year, what is in and out, the currency and rate, validity, MOQ and price breaks. The Quote Register reminds you to follow up before it expires, and the FX Scenarios sheet shows how much room you have if the rate moves.

Whether you start with the workbook tonight or the cost line checklist tomorrow morning, the loop is the same: cost every line, build the ladder, check the market, quote, ship and review. After the last invoice comes in, the Actual vs Estimate sheet tells you which estimate to change, so the next quote is better than the last.

A taste of Chapter 6

Before methods, one piece of arithmetic that costs exporters a great deal of money. Margin is profit as a share of the selling price. Markup is profit as a share of cost. They are not the same number. If a throw costs 600 rupees and you want a 30% margin, the price is 600 divided by 0.7, about 857 rupees. If you add 30% to cost instead, you get 780 rupees, which is only a 23% margin. A 30% margin is a 43% markup. Anjali's old 40% markup was a 29% margin before bank charges, financing or any of the costs between the factory and the buyer. The workbook always sets prices from margin: price equals cost divided by one, minus the target margin, minus fees and charges that scale with the invoice. That last part matters for marketplaces, where a 15% fee on the selling price has to come out of the same price.

Questions buyers ask

The Landed Cost and Export Pricing System: FAQs

Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my link

How do I calculate landed cost per unit?

Add every cost to the named place: ex-works cost, financing, origin charges, main freight and insurance, destination charges, clearance, duty and any import tax you cannot reclaim. Shared costs are split across the SKUs on the shipment by weight, volume or value, then divided by units. The workbook's Shipment Lines sheet does this for every SKU.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price; markup is profit as a share of cost. A 30% margin is a 43% markup, and a 30% markup is only a 23% margin. The kit always sets prices from margin: cost divided by one minus margin and fees.

Which Incoterm should I quote?

It depends on the buyer's experience, who has better freight rates and whether you can act as importer in the destination. The decision card covers the common cases, and the price ladder shows your price at every level so you can offer two terms side by side. Always name the rule, the place and the year.

Does the kit give me duty rates and HS codes?

No. Duty follows the exact classification and the destination's tariff, and a wrong rate is worse than none. The kit shows you how duty is calculated, marks sample rates clearly, gives you the broker email to confirm them and a dated sheet of recent low-value import changes with sources to re-check.

Can I use this with my staff?

Yes, within your own business under the personal licence: your sales, logistics and finance team can use the workbook, forms and templates for your company's quotes and shipments. For company-wide or multi-site use, or for agencies using it with several clients, ask about team and company licences at solutions@bodhih.com.

Does it work in my country?

The method works for any home currency and any destination: you set the currency, rates, margins and customs value basis yourself. The dated sheet covers recent rules for the US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, the GCC and export-side checks for India and others. Duty, tax and customs rules must still be checked locally with your broker.

Is this tax, customs or financial advice?

No. It is an educational costing and pricing system. Rates, classifications, tax treatment, hedging and contract wording must be confirmed with your customs broker, accountant, bank and lawyer. The kit does not promise any sales, profit or result.

I sell on marketplaces. Is this the right kit?

Yes for the landed cost of stock arriving at a marketplace warehouse, chargeable weight, and checking your marketplace price against your other channels. The full platform fee waterfall (referral, fulfilment, storage, advertising, returns) is covered by The Marketplace Seller Margin and Operations System, which uses this kit's landed cost as its input.

How can I measure my starting point?

AssessAll offers three assessments that fit this job (separate products, not included): Business Arithmetic: %, Profit and Loss, Interest; Pricing and Discount Discipline; and Four Quarters: Financial Judgement for Managers Who Are Not in Finance. They help you see where your pricing arithmetic and judgement are strong and where to practise.

How do I turn this into a development plan for my team?

Use the kit's 30/60/90 day plan as the practical spine, then see how a Jobulary development plan works at jobulary.com/how-it-works to turn the skills into goals and check-ins for each person.

How much does The Landed Cost and Export Pricing System cost?

₹999 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $29 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.

How do I get the files after paying?

Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.

What software do I need?

Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.

Can I get a refund?

Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.

Can my company buy this for a team?

Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
