How do I calculate the cost of producing a litre of milk or one egg on a small farm?
Add every cost of the enterprise for the month, including feed, vet, labour share, power, depreciation and, for layers, the birds' purchase price spread over their laying months, then divide by litres or eggs produced. The Dairy and Poultry Small Farm Kit from Bodhih Training does this in a workbook fed by simple daily records.

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.
The bill decides what you earned
Without your own daily record you accept whatever the centre or the trader says. A short bill or a missed payment goes unnoticed, month after month.
Eggs and milk in one purse
Dairy and poultry share a helper, power and a bank account. A good egg month can hide a dairy problem, and nobody knows which half pays for the other.
Withdrawal by memory
A treated cow's milk or a treated flock's eggs must stay out until the safe date. When that date lives in someone's head, one tired evening is enough for a mistake.
Feed vanishes quietly
Feed is most of the cost. Spillage, rats and missed entries eat the margin, and without a store count you never see it.
Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.
Imagine the first Sunday of next month. You open the workbook with a cup of tea, and as you check the centre bills against your own log, the one that is 12 litres short stands out in red. You already have the slip.
You look at the Unit Costs sheet and, for the first time, you know what one litre and one egg cost you, including the shed, your helper's share and the birds you bought months ago. You see which half of the farm carried the other.
When the vet treats a cow, the record is filled in before the vet leaves, the WITHHOLD tag goes on the stall and the whole family can see the safe-from date. Nothing leaves the farm early.
Whether you start with the daily shed sheet tonight or the Settings sheet tomorrow morning, the first month gives you numbers you wrote down yourself, and the confidence to talk to your society, your buyer, your vet and your bank as an equal.

Dairy: feed and fodder 42,460 rupees, vet and breeding 3,200, other direct costs 1,350, a 40% share of shared costs 7,080, and depreciation 2,000. Total 56,090 for 1,898 litres: 29.55 rupees per litre, of which 22.37 is feed. She received 39.05 a litre on average across the society and her direct customers, and her break-even price was 29.94 per litre sold. Her cost per litre had crept up from 26.00 in May to 27.90 in September and 29.55 in October. The reason was not one bill. Valli was dried off on 3 October and Rani was already dry, so two cows ate without milking, and two treatments added vet bills. Dry cows are the cost of the next lactation, and that is fine, but it is worth seeing.

The Dairy and Poultry Small Farm Kit: FAQs
Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my linkHow do I calculate the cost of milk production per litre?
Add the month's dairy costs: feed and fodder, vet and breeding, other direct costs, your dairy share of shared costs such as helper wages and power, and depreciation of the shed and equipment. Divide by the litres produced. The Unit Costs sheet does this from your Expenses and Milk Log.
How do I work out the cost of one egg?
Add layer feed, vet and vaccines, other poultry costs, the poultry share of shared costs, depreciation and the monthly flock cost (what the birds cost divided by the months you plan to keep them). Divide by eggs produced. The flock cost is the line most small farms forget.
Does the kit tell me what medicine or dose to give?
No. It is educational and organisational, not veterinary advice. It records what your vet prescribes and the withdrawal days from the label, works out safe-from dates and shows WITHHOLD until they pass. Doses, treatments and withdrawal periods come from the label and your vet.
Can I use this with my staff?
Yes. Use the files with your family, helpers and farm staff within your own farm business under the personal licence. Cooperatives, FPOs, training organisations and multi-site businesses that want to share the kit with members or clients can ask about company and multi-site licences at solutions@bodhih.com.
Does it work in my country?
The method works anywhere: the workbook takes any currency and unit and every alert level is on Settings. Laws on animal identification, medicines, withdrawal periods, milk and egg sales and disease reporting differ by country, so the dated rules sheet gives checked examples for the UK, EU, US, India, Kenya and Australia and tells you where to check. Always confirm locally.
I sell milk to a cooperative. Why keep my own records?
Your daily record is the evidence when a bill is short, a fat reading looks wrong or a deduction is unclear. The Centre Reconciliation sheet compares each bill with your log and flags differences above your tolerance.
Do I need a computer?
The paper forms and print pack work without one, and the workbook opens in Google Sheets on a phone or tablet. Most farmers fill the paper sheet in the shed and copy it into the workbook in the evening.
How do I measure my starting point?
If you want to test your planning judgment as well as your records, AssessAll offers the Small Business Operating Decision Assessment, Demand and Inventory Planning Judgment, and Estimation and Forecast Calibration. They show where your decisions on stock, prices and forecasts are strong and where to practise.
How do I turn this into a development plan?
Pick one habit, such as the monthly close, and write it as an if-then plan: if it is the first Sunday of the month, then I open the workbook at 10 am. Jobulary has a practical guide to if-then plans that make habits stick.
Is there a refund?
Digital kits are non-refundable once downloaded, except for corrupted files we cannot fix within 3 working days, duplicate charges or failed delivery.
How much does The Dairy and Poultry Small Farm Kit cost?
₹999 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $29 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.
How do I get the files after paying?
Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.
What software do I need?
Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.
Can I get a refund?
Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.
Can my company buy this for a team?
Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
