Quick answer

How do you run a student society for a year?

Take over properly with handover interviews and role cards, write a one-page annual plan with measurable goals, run every event through propose, book and assess, promote, run and review, keep a ledger with receipts and two approvers, and count back from the AGM. The Student Society Leader's Kit from Bodhih Training gives you the tools for each step.

Sound familiar?

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.

You inherited a title, not a job

The outgoing president sent a voice note and left. Nobody knows who approves spending, the shared drive is locked, and the social accounts belong to someone who graduated.

Events eat the committee

Every event is planned from scratch, timings collide on the day, and the risk assessment is written the night before. Two people end up doing everything.

Nobody is sure how much money there is

Receipts are in pockets, claims are approved by the person claiming, and the balance in the meeting does not match the SU statement.

Sponsors and the AGM arrive as surprises

Sponsorship emails go out without real numbers, the AGM notice is late, and nobody stands for treasurer.

Now imagine this

Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.

Imagine your first committee meeting after the election. As you open the Society Command Centre, the Settings sheet already has your society name, your year dates and your AGM date, and the Committee sheet shows every role with honest hours. The conversation starts with who does what, not with who forgot what.

Picture the week before your biggest event. The run sheet has a time and a name on every line, the risk assessment was approved three weeks ago, and the Event Pricing sheet told you in October what the ticket price would mean for the reserve. When the night comes, you can actually enjoy it.

Now think about February. Whether you start with the Dashboard at your next meeting or with the AGM and Handover sheet tonight, you can see what is red, who owns it and when it is due. The money matches the SU statement. The sponsor report is half written.

And when you hand over, you give your successor a workbook with the year in it, role cards, a handover file and an hour of your time for each role. They start where you finished.

A taste of Chapter 9

Inclusion means that cost, access, timing, food, alcohol, faith, language and sensory needs do not keep people out. It is mostly decided at the planning stage: which venue you book, what you charge, when you start, what you serve. Fixing it on the night rarely works. Welfare in a society is not counselling. Committee members are not trained to give mental health, medical or legal support, and should not try. The welfare role is to notice, listen, signpost to the university's wellbeing service or the SU's advice service, and make sure nobody is left alone in a crisis. The committee needs looking after too. A society year asks a lot of a few people, and burnout is common in February and March, when coursework, festival events and the AGM all land at once.

Questions buyers ask

The Student Society Leader's Kit: FAQs

Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my link

Can I use this with my committee?

Yes. The personal licence covers use within your own society: share the workbook, forms and templates with your committee and helpers. For a students' union or university that wants to give the kit to many societies, ask about a company or multi-site licence at solutions@bodhih.com.

Does it work in my country?

The method works anywhere a society has members, money, events and an AGM. The dated rules sheet covers how societies usually sit in the UK, the US, India and Australia, correct at November 2026. Laws and SU rules differ and change, so always check your own students' union, institution and local law.

Is this legal, financial or safety advice?

No. The kit is educational. It helps you organise the work. Your students' union and constitution decide the rules, contracts are signed through your SU, and risk assessments are approved by your SU on its own form.

How do I run a student society for the first time?

Start with handover interviews and role cards, agree a committee charter, write a one-page plan with three to five goals, and set up a calendar, a ledger and a risk register. Chapter 1 and the Start Here map walk you through the first hour and first week.

What does a society treasurer actually do?

Records every payment on the day, keeps receipts, sets and tracks the budget, approves claims with a second officer, reconciles with the SU statement monthly and reports at the AGM. Chapter 6 and the Ledger and Budget sheets cover it step by step.

How do I write an event risk assessment?

List hazards, score each by likelihood and impact, add controls with owners, write emergency arrangements and submit inside your SU's lead time. The Event Risk Assessment worksheet prepares you to fill in your SU's own form well.

Do I need Excel?

No. The workbook opens in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice. Formulas avoid newer Excel-only functions so they work in all three.

Can AI help us run the society?

Yes, for drafting, organising and checking. The AI Prompt Pack has 26 prompts with six rules: a person decides, never paste member or incident data into unapproved tools, check every fact, and follow your university's academic integrity policy for anything submitted for credit.

How can I measure my starting point as a leader?

If you want a structured view of your leadership skills, AssessAll offers Project & Delivery Leadership, Cross-Cultural & Inclusive Leadership and the Small Business Operating Decision Assessment assessments. They are optional and separate from the kit.

How do I turn this year into a development plan?

Running a society builds real skills in planning, budgeting, negotiation and leading people. Jobulary's individual development plan helps you turn what you learn into a measured development plan for your next role.

How much does The Student Society Leader's Kit cost?

₹799 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $24 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.

How do I get the files after paying?

Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.

What software do I need?

Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.

Can I get a refund?

Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.

Can my company buy this for a team?

Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
