How should a contractor communicate with renovation clients?
Hold a welcome meeting before the start, give the client a welcome pack and a dated decisions schedule, send a weekly update on the same day every week, confirm changes in writing, give bad news by phone first, and hand over with a walk-round. The Renovation Client Communication Pack from Bodhih Training has the templates.

You already feel the problem. Here is what it is costing you.
Clients chase you because they do not know what is happening
Evening calls and anxious messages about next week, the next payment or a quiet day. The work is fine; the information is missing.
Late decisions stall the programme
Tiles, taps and worktops chosen the week they are needed, so items arrive late and trades stand idle. Clients never knew the choice had a date.
Bad news turns into a dispute
A hidden problem, a delay or a price rise, explained late or in a text, and suddenly every invoice is questioned.
Nothing is written down
A thumbs-up on a photo at 11pm, a change agreed on site, a promise made by a crew member. When memories differ, there is no record.
Picture the next few weeks with the kit open beside you.
Picture the Friday after you start. At 3pm you open the weekly update template, check four numbers against the workbook and send it. By the time you start the van, your client knows what happened this week, who is in on Tuesday, which tile they must choose by the first and what the next payment covers.
As you open the Decisions sheet on Monday morning, it has already worked out which choices are due soon and which are overdue. You send the reminder from the library, offer to narrow the doors to two, and the programme holds.
When the floor comes up and something is wrong underneath, you know exactly what to do. You make it safe, pick up the phone, say the six lines, show the photos, and send the written summary the same afternoon with the new date from the explainer. The client is not happy about the joists, but they trust you.
Whether you start by branding the welcome pack tonight or by putting one client's decisions on the workbook tomorrow, the rhythm builds from the first week, and every job after that runs on the same standard.

Clients change their minds. It is their home and their money, and seeing a friend's kitchen can do it. The rule that protects everyone: acknowledge the same day, price it with the effect on the date, and do nothing until it is approved in writing. The Delay and Change Impact Explainer prices a change consistently from labour hours, materials with your markup and any credit for work no longer needed, and writes the plain-words sentence to send. Be clear in your own head about markup and margin while you price. A 15% markup on materials is added to their cost; it is not a 15% margin on the selling price, which would need a higher markup. Clients do not need that arithmetic, but your prices must be consistent from one change to the next. The formal variation form and its terms belong to your contract paperwork, and The Contractor Job File Kit covers it.

The Renovation Client Communication Pack: FAQs
Read the free guideAlready bought? Resend my linkCan I use this with my staff?
Yes. Within your own business you can use the templates, forms and workbooks with your office team, project leads, site leads and crew, and give the branded client documents to your own clients. That is covered by the personal licence. For company-wide or multi-site licences, email solutions@bodhih.com.
Does it work in my country?
The method works anywhere: clear expectations, dated decisions, a weekly rhythm and calm bad news are universal. The dated October 2026 notes sheet summarises cancellation and contract rules for the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the EU, South Africa and others, and points to where to check elsewhere. Consumer and contract law differs and changes, so check yours with a lawyer.
How often should a contractor update a renovation client?
Weekly, on the same day every week, is a sensible minimum for most domestic jobs, plus a same-day phone call for anything that changes dates, money or the work. The kit's template covers status, progress, next week, a look-ahead, decisions due, money and photos.
How do I tell a client about a delay or a hidden problem?
Call first, as soon as you know enough to describe it. Use six lines: headline, what happened, what it means for dates, money and daily life, options, your recommendation and the next step. Then confirm it in writing the same day. The kit has scripts and an explainer that calculates the new completion date.
What should a renovation client welcome pack include?
Who to contact for what, working hours, living with the works (noise, dust, water and power, pets, children, keys, parking, neighbours), how you will communicate, the decisions they must make and by when, how to raise a worry, privacy, and how the project will run, including stages, inspections, changes and payment stages.
Is this legal advice, or will the templates make my contracts compliant?
No. The kit is educational and practical. The templates are communication starting points, not contracts, and nothing in the kit makes a job or a document compliant. Check your contract, your lawyer, your regulator and a competent person for anything legal, structural, electrical, gas or fire related.
I am a homeowner. Is this for me?
This kit is written for the contractor's side of the relationship. If you are running your own renovation, The Renovation Project Manager is written for you.
Can I use it with a client portal or project app?
Yes. The method works in a spreadsheet and a messaging app, and carries over to construction project management tools with client logins. Use the templates for the words and the workbook or your app for the records.
How can I measure my starting point?
AssessAll offers separate assessments that fit this job: Field Service & On-Site Technician Judgment, Conflict Navigation & Resolution, and the Business Email Tone and Etiquette Assessment. They help you see where you or your team stand before you start, and are sold separately at assessall.com.
How do I turn this into a development plan?
Pick the three habits that matter most to you, such as the weekly update day, the welcome meeting and phone-first bad news, and reset them with a fresh start at the beginning of your next job. Jobulary explains how to use the fresh-start effect to reset a goal: jobulary.com/blog/fresh-start-effect-reset-a-goal.
How much does The Renovation Client Communication Pack cost?
₹999 including 18% GST for buyers in India, or $29 for buyers outside India. One-time payment, no subscription, with an automatic invoice.
How do I get the files after paying?
Instantly. Your download page opens the moment payment succeeds, and a permanent download link is emailed to you. Download each file separately or everything in one ZIP.
What software do I need?
Any of the usual tools: Excel or Google Sheets for spreadsheets, Word or Google Docs for templates, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Preview, Xodo or GoodNotes for the fillable PDFs, and Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar for the calendar plan.
Can I get a refund?
Because it is a digital download, kits are not refundable once downloaded. We always refund a duplicate charge or a failed delivery, and if a file is corrupted and we cannot fix it within 3 working days. Full terms: bodhih.org/refunds.
Can my company buy this for a team?
Yes. Team and company licences, and workshops on this topic run by Bodhih Training, are available. Write to solutions@bodhih.com or call +91 99000 11601.
